Thoughts
That was the most complete game UNCG has played all season (by a mile). I thought everyone that got in made genuine contributions and played within themselves. I was particularly impressed with what RJ White was able to bring on the offensive and defensive ends and Diante Baldwin really played some very good defense. Someone needed to accept that role for this team, and hopefully this game is the start of him accepting it. The entire second half defense was just really good.
On the super bright side for the Spartans, the guards did a wonderful job of taking care of the ball and distributing it to the right places to beat the JMU zone. Parker, Saddler, Potts and Baldwin combined to have only 1 turnover and 10 assists. I also thought the UNCG big men did a good job passing out double teams.
Since I've been hard on UNCG for a couple of weeks now. I have no desire to look for or write anything negative. It was just a good win. The Spartans showed 40 minutes of focus and effort and I'm very happy to see the team win this one. Go Spartans !!!

This is going to be a bit of a root canal. UNCG has been completely ground to a halt by any team that will occasionally run a zone defense against them. Well, the Dukes play a zone all the time. They play it on purpose, not just occasionally. So, they have practiced it and are very good at playing it. I'm not expecting this to be a 85-86 game with +74 possessions.
With fewer possessions, UNCG will have to value the ball each time they possess it. Uh oh. This is not the strong suit of the Spartans. UNCG will have to change that on Wednesday in order to pick up a win. They will have to get good looks at the basket and make them.
On the opposite side, James Madison hasn't shown themselves to be very good on the offensive end. They've only broke 70 points twice on the season. If UNCG can buck another of their season long trends by not giving the Dukes easy transition points, they can make life a little easier for themselves.
I'm really just looking for a game where UNCG can show focus and intensity for a full forty minutes. If that happens, I will live with whatever happen on the scoreboard. Go Spartans !!!

Thoughts
I really feel like I could put up my recap from the High Point game this season and only have to change the names to make it fit here. UNCG just slept right on through the first half and then only after halftime found it's rhythm and managed to shoot it's way back into the game. However, the hill was too steep to get over. The Spartans cut the 20 point deficit down to 3 on several occasions but just couldn't get all the way back.
Again defense, or the lack of, is proving to be the issue. There were way too many times where the Dukes simply drove to the basket an kicked for a wide open shot. Dribble penetration has proved to be a problem all season long and will probably continue.
Before any one posts a bunch of comments on my page, I do know that RJ White, Derrell Armstrong and Brian Coles sat on the end of the bench and apparently weren't available for this game. I have no idea why that was the case. However, it was obvious in the first half how bad the Spartans were missing Armstrong. He's been able to carry this team at times when Trevis's shots weren't falling. During those lulls, it would have been nice to have Derrell take it to the basket and create some instant offense.
Oh well. This one is over with. I was encouraged by the second half and think we all can chalk up that first half to having taken 15 days off from game competition. UNCG now heads down to Wilmington on Wednesday to play another CAA team on the road. Hopefully, with more success this time.
Go Spartans !!!
