Spartans Release 2011-2012 Schedule

UNCG Athletics released the 2011-2012 men's basketball schedule today. You can read the article here. Some of the games, such as return games at Florida State, at Miami and a home game with VCU were known. There were the familiar names of Duke, East Carolina and NC A&T on there as well. But there were some very interesting teams. UNCG will play at Tennessee and at Georgetown as part of the Maui Invitational. While the Spartans don't actually get to make the trip over to Hawaii (they are 1 of the 4 "mainland" teams), they will get to play in a mini bracket at MTSU against the host team and either Towson or Belmont.

All-in-all I'm quite happy to see this schedule. While it does have some difficulty, there are actually some winnable contests for the Spartans. These type games have been sorely lacking the past few years. With a team that returns all but 1 player, I think this schedule will allow for some upward movement by UNCG.

Spartans Stay Hot, Surge Past Samford

Samford Athletics

Brandon Evans (26 pts) led 4 Spartans in double figures as UNCG jumped out to lead by as many as 20 in the first half and 25 in the second half. Samford managed to fight back to get the lead down to 6. However, the Spartans made 17-19 free throws in the last 3 minutes to seal the game. Trevis Simpson (22 pts) continued his hot streak by scoring in double figures for the fourth straight game. The Spartans shot 52% from the field and 54% from behind the arc. It's UNCG's 4th win in the last 5 games.

Spartans Fall in Heartbreaker at Chattanooga

UTC Athletics

Korey VanDussen's career high 33 points weren't enough to over come Ricky Taylor's 41 points, as UTC surged back from a 109-102 deficit with less than 2 minutes remaining in double overtime. Trevis Simpson (13 pts) had hit a layup to send the game into the 2nd overtime, but missed a shot in the lane to give the Spartans the win.

It was an odd game that saw UNCG jump out to a quick 11-2 lead only to have the Mocs dominate for the rest of the half and part of the second half. UNCG found itself down 49-29 before getting on senior Brandon Evans's back. Evans scored all 28 of his points in the second half and overtimes.

It looked as though the Spartans had stolen the game after Kyle Randall's 3 pointer near the end of regulation. However, Keegan Bell (24 points) made a deep 3 pointer to extend the game.

4 Spartans fouled out of the contest, and UTC shot an amazing 53 free throws for the night. UNCG offset that by making 17 3 pointers out of 43 attempts (39.5%).
