Thoughts
UNCG got hit with an ambush on Saturday night. 5,000 rabid fans and a determined basketball team dressed in black were waiting to jump them at McKenzie Arena. When they did jump them, it was almost a complete knockout. Through 10 minutes, UNCG had 3 made baskets and 8 turnovers. But the Spartans got up off the mat to take a 1 point lead at halftime and a 10 point lead in the second half.
The game ended in a scenario that has played out for the Spartans a lot over the past month and a half. Trevis Simpson made a big basket, Derrell Armstrong made a driving layup and David Williams made a block to preserve the win.
Elon lost at Samford earlier in the day. So, the UNCG win put them alone in first place in the North division by 1 game with 4 to play. This season appears to be coming down to the regular season finale in Burlington to decide the North Division Champion.

Times-Free Press Previews Tonight's Game

UPDATE: Also MocsMania has a nice preview of th game as it is listed as the "SoCon Monster Game of the Week".The Spartans win if ... Junior guard Derrell Armstrong continues the hot streak that he’s been on. The SoCon player of the week scorched UTC for 29 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the arc after entering the game with five 3s all season. He followed that with 27 points in a last-second 61-60 win against Samford.
The Mountaineers win if ... They dominate the post and slow the game just a tick. Both teams like to run and it’s the Spartans’ best style, but ASU has a big advantage in a half-court game because of its size and experience.

Thoughts
I thought it was a great team effort last night to pull out the win. Trevis Simpson was just having an off night and Derrell Armstrong really helped to pick him up. With the combination of Armstrong, Nick Paulos (8 pts) and Kyle Randall (15 pts) Help UNCG's bench to out score the Mocs bench 49-12.
Poor free throw shooting almost allowed Chattanooga to make a furious comeback. However, a big 3 pointer from Korey Van Dussen (7 pts & 4 rebs) put a dagger in the Mocs. From there, the Spartans dropped in enough free throws to pull away.
UNCG has now won 3 straight games and is sitting a position to make a huge push towards contending in the North. With Elon, Chattanooga and App State losing on Thursday, UNCG now finds itself tied for second (.5 game back in the loss column). That's huge thinking back to where they were at only 7 days ago.

UNCG Gets Some Good Press
I don't remember if I've said it here in the blog, but the Chattanooga Times-Free Press does probably the best job of covering all of the SoCon basketball teams. UTC's beat writer, David Uchiyama, is very plugged into what is happening all around the conference. So, If you're ever in need of some UNCG news, you can usually find some articles there.
Having said that, there is a very good article posted about the UNCG coaching transition. I thought the comments by Korey Van Dussen and Trevis Simpson about the mid season change to Wes Miller were interesting. They are the kind of comments that I would expect and part of the reason why I wasn't a huge fan of making the move in the middle of the year. However, I think it also speaks to the tremendous job that Miller has done to not only keep this team together, but to get the guys to buy into the program for the rest of the season.

Korey VanDussen's career high 33 points weren't enough to over come Ricky Taylor's 41 points, as UTC surged back from a 109-102 deficit with less than 2 minutes remaining in double overtime. Trevis Simpson (13 pts) had hit a layup to send the game into the 2nd overtime, but missed a shot in the lane to give the Spartans the win.
It was an odd game that saw UNCG jump out to a quick 11-2 lead only to have the Mocs dominate for the rest of the half and part of the second half. UNCG found itself down 49-29 before getting on senior Brandon Evans's back. Evans scored all 28 of his points in the second half and overtimes.
It looked as though the Spartans had stolen the game after Kyle Randall's 3 pointer near the end of regulation. However, Keegan Bell (24 points) made a deep 3 pointer to extend the game.
4 Spartans fouled out of the contest, and UTC shot an amazing 53 free throws for the night. UNCG offset that by making 17 3 pointers out of 43 attempts (39.5%).

Second Half Surge Sends Spartans to Win

In a game the was the exact opposite from the one played 11 days ago, UNCG played a very poor first half. However, they only found themselves down 7 at the intermission. In the second half, the Spartans went on a 16-0 run to turn an 8 point deficit into and 8 point lead. The team cruised home from there. It was the second straight home win for UNCG.
Positives
- Defense --- UNCG trapped UTC's guards and the Mocs responded by giving the ball away in huge numbers (23 TO's for the game). Chattanooga had been a very turnover machine team this season. It was goods to see the Spartans make them continue this trend. This was the biggest factor in keeping the Spartan in a game where they shot very poorly.
- Heart --- I really enjoyed seeing the team bring a real passion to the court in the second half. I thought the crowd gave the guys energy and the guys responded by giving the crowd something to be excited about.
Negatives
- Poor Start ... Again ---The Spartans just cannot help but to dig themselves a huge hole. Even though the team really battled back, I really wish they could just get off the better starts and play from ahead.
- Shooting --- If there is one glaring weakness on this team, it is the team's shooting ability (or lack of). Last night, the guys hit just enough of their open shots to get them the win. Hopefully, it will give everyone a shot of confidence.

UNCG took and 26-20 lead at the half. However, the Spartans got hit with a 21-2 run to start the second half and could never recover.
Positives
- Rebounding, again --- It seem like if there was a bright spot during this season season, it would have to be the work of the Spartans on the boards. UNCG out rebounded the Mocs 43-37 (18-6 offensive). The Spartans had 16 second chance points. The Moccs only had 4.

SoCon Looking at Options (Updated)
The Southern Conference will decide whether or not to alter the format of its men's and women's basketball tournaments at the conference meetings in Hilton Head (SC) this week.

UPDATE: The SoCon has decided to use two venues from 2012 and beyond (next season will be played in Charlotte and 2011 in Chattanooga). This will limit future sites moving forward.

Iamarino said the three major options that will be discussed before the athletic directors’ vote Friday are leaving the tournament the way it is, including every team but playing first-round games at campus sites and limiting the fields to the top eight teams.
“I do think there’s a consensus about one thing,” UTC athletic director Rick Hart said. “We’ve tried all 23 teams in one venue and it doesn’t work.”
The schedule in that case is too crowded, leading to playing six games on the second day, starting at 9 a.m. The full schedule also limits the amount of practice time teams have on the arena floor.

While no bids are presently on the table for 2012, among the Southeast cities with two suitable venues that could be good fits are Charleston, Birmingham, Winston-Salem and Greensboro, N.C. For cities such as Charleston and Birmingham to host, that would likely require the use of on-campus venues, such as the College of Charleston’s new Carolina First Arena or Samford’s Pete Hanna Center.

SoCon Tournament Possibly Moving
Over the past few weeks, it appears Charlotte business leaders and SoCon officials have been in talks to bring the 2010 Southern Conference Tournament to either Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena or Bojangles' Coliseum. Here are some links to articles and discussions.

It appears that Chattanooga is willing to back their hosting date up one year and probably get some financial considerations for being so helpful. But, why the rush to get this in place for next year?
The CIAA Tournament is locked into TWC Arena for the next 3 years. In 2011 & 2012, that tournament and the SoCon Tournament fall on the same weekend. Next year is the only available year where that's not the case.
Don't believe that reason? Let's try this one. Stephen Curry will be a senior next season (provided he doesn't go pro). Imagine the fanfare of this tournament in a central location with a legitimate NBA lottery pick playing in it. Also, Davidson's campus is right down the road. Seems like the perfect storm to fill up the arena.
Want another option? If you believe massage board talk, Chattanooga barely broke even hosting this year's tournament and that's with the hometown team winning. It appears next season that UTC will be rebuilding. Why not wait a year to host again when the Mocs might be better and get more locals into the arena?
I think all of these reasons have some merit to them. I think Chattanooga is a fine place to host the tournament. Unfortunately, Chattanooga (and Charleston) are destination spots for the tournament. With economic times the way they are, the SoCon is going to have to take the tournament to where the fans are located.
I really hope this happens. Money is tight for me right now, just like everyone else. It would be nice to drive ~ 1 hour down the road to see the tournament. Plus, I really like TWC Arena. This seems like the right thing to do at the right time.
But, that's just my opinion.

UTC Wins SoCon Title
UTC defeated College of Charleston at McKenzie Arena to claim the SoCon Tournament and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This year was similar to the last time the tournament was held in Chattanooga, in that College of Charleston beat Davidson in the semi-finals (like UNCG did in 2005), only to fall to the host school the next night. The wrap up of this season's tournament can be found over at SoCon fans.
Chattanooga's record all but assures them a #16 seed in the "Big Dance". If you looking for some interesting discussion, try the forums at Davidson, UTC and College of Charleston.
In other news ... Elon's Ernie Nestor and High Point's Bart Lundy will not be returning to coach the schools next season.

The defeat marks the sixth straight for UNCG at Fleming. One more loss-It took me over 5 minutes to find the Samford-UNCG article in Samford's own hometown newspaper. There were tons of Auburn football (and even basketball stories) though.

beginning of the 1992-93 seasons.
