Thoughts
The completely new look UNCG Spartans showed some substantial firepower on the offensive end by having 5 guys score in double figures and Spartans fans finally got to see Kyle Cain in uniform. Cain didn't disappoint by recording a double double (14 points & 11 rebounds). The star of the show for me, though, was Tevon Saddler. The freshman from Baltimore had a great all around game by tallying 16 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Saddler did a great job of running the break, getting to the rim and setting up teammates (and himself) for easy baskets.
Most of the new guys got decent minutes and made some nice plays. Tyrone Outlaw was very efficient and scoring 13 points. Diante Baldwin, Jordy Kuiper and Clay Byrd also had their moments. Plus, it was nice to see the new guys blend nicely with returning players Kayel Locke and Nicholas Paulos. Locke did his normal thing of making and array of shots around the basket and Paulos took and made 3 pointers in rhythm. All-in-all it was a very good offensive showing.
On the negative side, the Spartans were sloppy with the ball and allowed too many 2nd chance attempts to a team were undersized. These are things that I expect UNCG will work on this week as they head into a game with a very good front line. However, some of these negatives might be due to Coach Miller looking for the right combinations of players. Also, Jordan Potts didn't dress for this game. Not sure of the reason, though.
In the end, it was about what I expected to see on both ends of the court. It was nice to see the balance and sharing of the basketball. The final score honestly never really mattered as UNCG controlled the game the entire time. Now it's time for the real thing.

Spartans Release 2013-2014 Schedule
UNCG released their 2013-2014 schedule on Monday. It features an odd mix of 4 ACC opponents and 3 non-D1 teams. The Spartans will also be playing in 2013 Gulf Coast Showcase in Naples/Ft Myers, FL. The brackets for that tournament have not been released yet.

Thoughts
Even though the halftime score might not have indicated it, I thought UNCG controlled the game throughout. Sloppy turnovers and defensive lapses were the only things that kept the Big Blues even remotely competitive in this exhibition contest. The game was played in front of a packed and (at times) raucous crowd in Fleming Gym. UNCG shook off the nerves after the first 20 minutes and played very sound basketball. Everyone played and all made some nice contributions. It's tough to talk about everyone and their play. So, I'll just hit the high spots.
Kelvin McNeil was a very big surprise. I didn't really know a lot about him or what to expect of him coming to UNCG. However, from the appearance of this game, McNeil will see a big spot in the rotation and be heavily counted on to man the post position. I was thoroughly impressed with his play and am excited to see him play throughout the season.
David Williams created shear havoc on both ends of the court. It's very obvious that David's skill set is tailored perfectly to Wes Miller's style of play (both offense and defense). I'm not sure how many deflections he made on the defensive end, but it seemed like he had one per possession. His fast break dunk from the wing in the first half was the play of the night for me.
The main thing that jumped out at me was the pace that this Spartan team intends to play. It was on the verge of out of control ti was so fast, but it lead to a bunch of easy layups and dunks. Some of the turnovers were "cover your eyes" bad. But if G can create as many possessions as they did last night, the points will come in huge bunches.
Should be fun to watch going forward. Go Spartans !!!

The Spartans hit their opponent with a 22-4 outburst right off the bat and by the end of the first 20 minutes lead by a huge margin (53-23). Trevis Simpson (18 pts) paced the Spartans, who had 3 other players score in double figures. Defense was the first half story as UNCG forced their neighbors from down the road into 15 turnovers and 37.5 % shooting. The game was played in a mostly full Fleming Gym.
This is UNCG's only exhibition game. They open the season on Friday night at Tennessee. That game will be broadcast on FSN-South.

Big Men Lead Gold Past Blue
The Gold team had the big men and powered their way to a 62-53 victory in the Blue-Gold scrimmage on Sunday. Aloysius Henry had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Aaron Bracket scored 10 points and had 14 rebounds. Nick Paulos lead the Blue squad with 15 points.

Cole's Beats Buzzer for Overtime Win
Gold 56 - Blue 53 OT
UNCG Athletics
Brian Cole hit a 3 pointer as time expired in overtime to lead the Gold squad to a 56-53 win over the Blue team in this year's Blue-Gold scrimmage. The teams teams finished regulation tied at 49.
Walk on Brandon Davis lead the gold team with 17 points. Newcomer Aaron Brackett scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds. Freshman Drew Parker had a team best 7 assists.
Senior Brandon Evans led all scorers with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Aloysius Henry added 16 points for the Blue team. Korey Van Dussen had a game high 8 assists.
Kyle Randall and Trevis Simpson did not participate in the scrimmage.

I think we can definitely call this a success for season #1 in the coliseum. I'm especially proud considering how many of these games were played without the students in session. Plus this seasson we didn't get the help of having a Davidson playing here and bringing their sizable triad alumni base to the coliseum.

Samford (8-10) @ UNCG (4-15)

* This game is being played in Fleming Gym due to a scheduling conflict with the Greensboro Coliseum. The doors are set to open at 3 pm and the athletics office is advising people to get there early.
Spartan Notes:
- A 16-0 second half spurt pushed UNCG to a victory over Chattanooga Thursday night in the Greensboro Coliseum. The final score was 62-49. Mikko Koivisto lead the way with 15 points and Ben Stywall had 13 points and 15 rebounds.
- UNCG raised their SoCon recdord to 3-5.
- Last time these 2 teams met in Birmingham, UNCG rolled to a 73-40 victory. It was the first Spartan victory over the Bulldogs since they joined the SoCon.
- Ben Stywall leads UNCG in scoring (13.7) and rebounding (10.1). Kyle Randall leads the team in assists (2.4).
- For the year, the Spartans are shooting 37.8% from the field, 27.5% from behind the arc and 71% from the free throw line.
Bulldog Notes:
- Kaylin Johnson hit a 3 pointer with 17 seconds to life Samford to a win at Elon on Thursday, 50-49. Andy King led Samford with 16 points.
- The Bulldogs raised their record to 2-4 in the Southern Conference. Both wins have came against Elon.
- Samford is in the middle of playing 3 road games in 5 days. UNCG did this same thing last week. However, Samford's trip has already proved more successful as the Spartans failed to win a game on their trip.
- Josh Davis leads Samford in scoring (11.8). Trey Montgomery leads the team in rebounding (4.2) and assists (3.3).
- For the season, Samford is shooting 45.7% from the field, 35.4% from behind the arc and 67.9% from the free throw line.
My Thoughts:
Just because UNCG beat this team by 33 points in Birmingham, it doesn't mean that they will walk all over them today. The Spartans caught Samford on a night when nothing would go in the basket and the team basically shut down. I'm sure they will be fired up to repay UNCG for the home beating. I expect UNCG to play the same zone defense that they did in the first meeting. If the Bulldogs hit their 3 point shots, this will be a very good game.
Fleming Gym will be packed and electric. I intend to get there as early as possible because of the amount of tickets already sold versus seats in the place. There should be plenty of energy in the place for the Spartans to feed on.
