Conference Changing Some Things

From the SoCon spring meetings wrapped up last week in Asheville. There were a few changes announced that related to basketball. The full article can be found here. The main points are ...

- Moved back to 16 game schedule starting in 2013-2014. It was 18 games before.

- Tournament byes now go to the 2 division winners and then the next 2 teams with the best conference record. This change will take place in 2013.

- The league will create a position known as Men's Basketball Coordinator.

This individual, reporting to the Commissioner, will address issues designed to improve the league's performance in areas such as non-conference scheduling, participation in exempt events, and marketing opportunities and general promotion of the league's basketball tournament.
All of these rules will henceforth be known as "The Davidson-Charleston Concessions" as that they were all designed to keep these two schools from leaving and going to the CAA.

Not sure if it'll work, though.

Thoughts
The last 5 minutes of the first half gave Western Carolina all of the margin they would need. After that, it was all about surviving every run that UNCG threw at them. That was a great game in a fun environment. I totally expected the Cats to get tired and eventually fade. It never happened.

Western Carolina deserves a lot of credit. They were the better team on Sunday night. I will absolutely be rooting against them in the championship game due to their fans being obnoxious assholes. I'll get to more of that in my trip wrap-up post sometime later this week.

For now, I'm just sad to see what had become a fun 2012-2012 season come to an end. The last 2+ months have been an enjoyable ride. I am already ready for next season.

Thoughts
The Spartans were done. You could feel the air go out of the fans behind the bench. The score was 49-38 with about 10 minutes left in the game, and I wrote the word "Ovah" on my Twitter feed.

That was about the time UNCG remembered they were a better team than App and took off on a 27-6 run to thump App right on back to Boone. Trevis Simpson finished it off with a ridiculous windmill dunk.

I encourage everyone to get to Asheville to see today's game. It's a great place to watch basketball. I'll write a full post on my entire experience next week. But for now the UNCG basketball team rolls on. Hopefully this season can continue on a little longer.

My Pick
After the defensive sluggfest I expect in the 6 pm game, this one should have some real tempo to it. I expect to see both teams play sloppy, but at a frenetic pace. Since I feel compelled to pick an upset, I'm taking the Mocs to win for the first time away from the Roundhouse. Score ... 86-79.

Tournament Posts

With the SoCon Tournament starting in a couple of days, I thought I would kind of give you an idea of how posts were going to go for the next few days. I will be posting individual game previews for all of Friday's action. Depending on how much I get to see of the Friday games, I will post summaries. I will post something in the way of previews for Saturday's games, but I'm not sure what those will look like quite yet. Beyond that, I will be at the tournament. So, I don't know what I'll get to post. I will be there with my new tablet and will at least try to use Twitter.

Thanks for sticking with me and the UNCG basketball team this year. They haven't always made it easy on us, but it has been a fun ride so far. I'd love to see it go on for a lot longer. Again, I hope to see a huge group of UNCG fans in Asheville. So, please get your tickets and we'll see you there.
